Models and Formulas… Please Memorize
Models and Formulas (please memorize…) – Many who teach science would say that although science is accessible, it is often the mathematical skill required to solve the science problem that makes the learning of science difficult. While this dilemma is important to me (a science teacher), I became distracted as I did some research into accessible science and math concepts for students.
In the search of “finding ways to connect to science concepts and mathematics”, I came across a blogger – Dan Mayer. Dan is a prolific blogger and provides alternative ideas on mathematics and the teaching of mathematics. He has been teaching since 2006.
His ideas are interesting but more interesting are the persistent records of pedagogy and content that he has created. This blog represents an evolving of pedagogy and teacher learning that in past teachers found difficult to do. The ideas of lesson plans and discussion of pedagogy was more limited to conversations in between classes and the sharing of binders. Now, with blogging and YouTube – teachers are participation in their learning is more powerful. Dan’s blog not only shows that importance of reflection as a teacher practitioner. It allows teachers to see the possibility of how blogging can connect our ideas with others. He also has a Ted Talk – check it out below…
